Sketched Birthday Cake

Sketched Birthday Cake

wDSC_7955

(inside: happy birthday)

I wanted to make an artist-themed birthday card for my niece, and when I saw the easel in the  “Painter’s Palette” stamp set from Stampin’ Up, I thought it would be perfect.  I ordered two other stamp sets that had images that appeared to be water-colored (to stamp on the easel) and waited not-so-patiently for the sets to arrive.  Unfortunately, the easel was much smaller than I imagined, and the images I thought I’d use on it did not fit.  I ended up putting the “Happy Birthday” image from the SU “Watercolor Words” set on the inside of the card (photo below) and set out to find a smaller image from my stash that looked hand-drawn, painted, etc.  I ended up using the cake from the SU “Sketch A Party” set (retired?) which allowed me to skip the greeting on the front while still making it obvious that it was a birthday card.  (I won’t tell you how many things I tried before finding this image that worked, and I was running out of time to get this card done before her birthday!!)

I used paper from the “Painted with Love” designer series paper pack (Stampin’ Up) along with Gina K Edible Eggplant and heavy base weight white card stock.  The ink was SU Blackberry Bliss and Calypso Coral.  (I “stamped off” the shaded part of the cake and “painted” the candle with a water brush to create two shades of the same color.)

I used the “trace and cut” feature with my Silhouette to cut out the easel.

Here are two more samples with other patterns from the same paper pack:

And here is the inside image (which I originally envisioned on the easel):

Before trying the sketched cake image, I had tried using the floral stamp from the Stampin’ Up “Heartfelt Blooms” stamp set which was a sale-a-bration incentive stamp set that was free for spending $50 (ends March 31, 2018).  I actually really liked how that came out, but with no greeting, it did not seem birthday-ish enough.  I can’t wait to play with this set again!

On the first one, I used Gina K Warm Cocoa ink for the easel and GK Charcoal Brown card stock for the background mat.  For the second one, I heat embossed the easel with versamark ink and Gina K gold embossing powder and used Edible Eggplant card stock.  The designer paper for both was still from the “Painted with Love” pack.

The cards are 4 1/4″ squares, but they fit into a regular A2 sized envelope (with extra room on the side) so they do not require a trip to the post office for mailing.

Hearts and Flourishes Anniversary Card

Hearts and Flourishes Anniversary Card

(inside:  Best wishes today & always!)

This CAS card features a die cut that was adapted from the cut file called “5×5 Hearts Flourish Card (design #116160)” by Daniela Angelova which I purchased from the Silhouette store.

The panel was cut from champagne shimmer card stock from the Recollections and was paired with gray and ivory both from the Recollections Coffee and Cream heavy weight card stock pack.

The greeting is from the Gina K Designs “The Wetlands” stamp set and was heat embossed with versamark ink and Recollections silver embossing powder.

You can see the greeting better with a little less light:

Stick Snowman Ornament and Card

Stick Snowman Ornament and Card

This is the fourth of my cards with ornaments.  This one features a removable snowman ornament made from a jumbo craft stick.

I sewed a small, strong magnet onto the back of the snowman’s scarf and placed another one  behind the greeting panel so the ornament can easily be removed or placed back on the card.

I debated between using regular craft/popsicle sticks or these jumbo craft sticks.  I really liked the curvy shape of the jumbo sticks, but they are much longer than the craft sticks.  Because I went with the jumbo ones, my card needed to be much longer than most cards.  I remembered a video Gina K had done showing a card that fit into a regular business envelope and realized that size would be perfect!  My finished card measures 3.75 inches x 9.25 inches.  Unfortunately, with the ornament attached, the card is too bulky to mail as a regular letter/card so it will need to be sent from the post office as a package.

Tin Snowman Ornament and Card

Tin Snowman Ornament and Card

This is the third in my series of cards with ornaments.  This one has a removable, rusty tin snowman ornament.

Here is the ornament by itself:

To create the ornament, I started with “Primitive Rusty Tin Snowman Garland” that I purchased online from Factory Direct Craft.

garland

I cut the garland apart with wire cutters (leaving some wire on both sides for the arms).  Each piece of garland has 10 snowmen, so I was able to make a bunch of ornaments (and cards).  I punched holes for the eyes, buttons, and hanger in each one with my We R Memory Keepers Crop-A-Dile.

I used versamark and Tim Holtz Walnut Stain Distress embossing powder to create the rough finish on the hat and on the mini brads used for the eyes.  The mini button brads (and brads for eyes) are both Recollections (from Michaels).  Wired ribbon was used for the scarf and trim on hat.

I made another version of the ornament with raffia instead of the ribbon:

Here is the card without the ornament:

For the card, I used “Country Snowman” patterned paper by The Paper Studio (from Hobby Lobby) and some brown (unmarked) card stock from their open stock.  I also used some “Rustic Cream” card stock from Papertrey Ink.  All the edges were inked with Gina K Charcoal Brown ink.

The center layered pieces were cut with dies from the Gina K Designs Fabulous Label die set.  A Stripe Background embossing folder and a Snowflake Swirls embossing folder (both by Darice) were used to add texture to these panels.   The greeting is from the “Peace and Joy” stamp set from Gina K Designs.

Behind the greeting panel in the center is a small, strong magnet which allows the metal snowman to easily attach and detach.  This panel was popped up with foam tape to accommodate the thickness of the magnet.

Foiled Christmas Tree Words in Gold and White

Foiled Christmas Tree Words in Gold and White

vDSC_7651.jpg

This 5×7 inch card features digital paper/images I purchased on Etsy which is a great place to find material suitable for foiling.  Put black and white digital paper (with a key word like Christmas or stripes, etc.) in the search bar, and a bunch of choices pop up.  The Christmas Tree Words Digital Clip Art is by The Digital Stash, and the striped background is from the Black and White Classics digital paper pack by Bridget Eubank Designs.

These panels, along with some plain toner sheets, were foiled with Gold Thermoweb Deco Foil, my monochromatic (black and white) laser printer, and my mini minc foiling machinePapertrey Ink white card stock was also used as mats and the card base.

Although hard to photograph, there is incredible shine as the light hits the card at different angles.
